Everlasting Cycles: How Waste Becomes Food

Can products and materials be healthy for humans and the environment, combine functionality and aesthetics, be produced with fairness in every aspect – and be economically successful at the same time?

The answer is: yes. Products of consumption and products of service can be conceived by intelligent product design right from the beginning in such a way that their material contents are beneficial, safe and profitable. Thus, products and materials can circulate as either “technical” or biological nutrients in cycles and be re-used – nearly indefinitely!

This fundamentally new approach to the production of ecologically-intelligent materials leads to a comprehensive product quality, and allows nearly 100% re-use of all material contents. No more should valuable materials at the end of their lifetime end up in landfills, be incinerated or recycled into those of a lower quality.

What does this look like in practice? Household appliances, radios or television sets will not be purchased, they will be leased to the customer and then returned to the manufacturer at the end of their life-time to be disassembled and re-used again as technical nutrients for new products; Carpets and upholstery are biodegradable and flame-retardant at the same time, and will be returned to the earth as biological nutrients; Packaging can be thrown away without consideration to where it is placed.

In collaboration with EPEA, Messe Frankfurt creates Nutec, which, for the first time, combines a trend-setting congress and a trade exhibition for:

• the use of materials, products, and services in an entirely new approach.
• companies that already produce products in the Cradle to Cradle Design, or for those that are willing to do so.
• exchange of know-how.
• networking of a diverse array of industries.
• creation of new markets for innovative products, and new manufacturing procedures, services and interim solutions without affecting existing products and markets.

Nutec stands for Nutrients, Upcycling, Triple-Top-Line, Eco-effectiveness, Community – keywords for an innovative product philosophy, which combines new dimensions of quality, safety and design.
