From space to space-time

Product design is traditionally based on the optimization of functionality (technical and aesthetic performance) and cost.

The product is seen in space with its three dimensions: height, length, and width. All of the conventional design intentions can be demonstrated directly with a prototype or in an exhibition. The product is embedded in material flows on an obvious "take, make, waste" trajectory.

The loss of resources at the cradle of products and the accumulation of waste and emissions at their grave are binding unless resources are effectively renewed after usage.

Cradle to Cradle Design provides a way to realize resource recovery by designing the ecological dimension and eliminating the concept of waste. It systematically incorporates a fourth dimension of materials beyond their length, height, and width - namely time. Materials are transformed and modified at various stages along the supply chain; in Cradle to Cradle, these material flows are designed so that linear material flows become cyclical material flows. In this way, materials maintain their status as resources in biological or technical cycles.
