EmpCo: Communicating sustainability claims reliably

EPEA reviews product data, supply chain information, and supporting documentation, evaluates them against appropriate standards, and develops concrete, reliable claims for product communication.
What is changing?

Why act now?

The Empowering Consumers Directive (EmpCo) is increasing the requirements for environmental and sustainability claims in B2C business. In the future, general statements must be specific and verifiable.

Reliable target paths

Future promises require measurable goals, a plan, and monitoring.

Concrete evidence

Claims must be methodologically sound and scientifically substantiated.

Which claims does EPEA review?

Categories for evaluating claims

EPEA distinguishes between three categories of environmental claims. Different types of evidence are required for each category.

Past

Objectively verifiable product properties that can be substantiated today, such as recycled content, ingredients, or CO₂ metrics.

Life cycle

Evidence regarding the environmental impact and circularity of a product throughout its entire life cycle.

Future

Robust goals and transformation pathways for future improvements, for example regarding climate protection, circular economy, or material health.

How it works

How EPEA supports your sustainability communication

Capturing and classifying claims

We review existing statements on websites, packaging, product documentation, and in marketing communications. In doing so, we determine which claims should be clarified, substantiated, or reformulated.

Gathering evidence from products and the supply chain

EPEA handles communication with suppliers as needed, aggregates existing information, and evaluates the quality of the documentation.

Expert assessment of product properties

Depending on the claim, we examine factors such as material composition, recycled content, chain of custody, circularity, or environmental impact.

Prepare documentation and messaging

The results are documented in a verifiable manner. Based on this, EPEA develops proposals for precise, product-specific claims with a clearly defined scope and reference to the respective evidence.
