Material Health Statement®

Material Health Statement®
Making material health visible
The Material Health Statement® from EPEA makes a product's chemical composition transparent and classifies its material health through a clear, independent assessment. It helps manufacturers prepare relevant material health information in an understandable way and communicate it effectively to the outside world.

Why transparency and material health are becoming increasingly important

Funding advice for circular product development

EPEA combines in-depth technical expertise in the areas of material health, recyclability and CO2 with a clear understanding of eligible research and development activities.

Identify opportunities

We help companies to strategically structure their projects and identify suitable funding programs.

Ensuring quality

EPEA ensures that your project content is professionally reliable and meets all criteria for successful funding.
What are the benefits of an MHS®?

Your benefits at a glance

An MHS® helps manufacturers document material health in a traceable way and make it accessible to customers, planners, and other project stakeholders. It can therefore support sales communication and differentiate products from competitor offerings that lack comparable transparency information.
Transparent presentation of a product's material health
Support for market differentiation
Basis for substitution and optimization decisions
Compatibility with Circularity Passport® and Cradle to Cradle Certified® processes

Funding is available in many cases for the development of circular and healthy Cradle to Cradle products.

How it works

Your path to an MHS® in just a few steps

The creation of an MHS® begins with the product's production formulation. This includes, among other things, technical documentation and safety data sheets.

From this information, EPEA derives the qualitative and quantitative chemical composition of the product. The goal is to achieve an understanding of the product composition that is as accurate as possible, while remaining relevant and plausible.

Capture data basis

Review and evaluate formulation data as a basis for further assessment.

Incorporate supplier information

Supplement missing information via the supply chain, if necessary under a non-disclosure agreement.

Derive chemical composition

Transparent determination of product composition.

Assess material health

Assessment of the product's chemical composition and derivation of a rating for ingredients and upstream products.

Create MHS®

Preparation of the assessed chemical composition in the MHS® transparency document.

Communicate results transparently

The manufacturer uses the finalized MHS® in their product communication.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about content, process, and benefits.
How does EPEA handle confidential information?
EPEA assesses defined product ingredients without disclosing them if a supplier requires this as a condition for declaring the composition of a production input. Confidential substances are labeled as "Proprietary," creating transparency without revealing the exact formulations.
What distinguishes the MHS® from other formats?
The MHS® creates comprehensive transparency regarding material health. It considers not only the ingredients but also their assessment within the product context and potential for future optimizations.
What does an MHS® contain?
An MHS® contains information about the product, the manufacturer, and the validity period, as well as an overview of the assessed ingredients, end-of-use scenarios, and the results of the material health assessment. A graphical summary makes the distribution of the assessment results easy to understand at a glance.
Why should an MHS® be updated regularly?
An MHS® is valid for two years. Regular updates document changes to formulations, new supply chain information, or implemented optimization measures, making progress in material health transparent.
