Climate action requires more than just reducing greenhouse gas emissions. To meet climate targets, removing CO₂ from the atmosphere will become increasingly important alongside rapid and consistent emission reductions. The built environment can make a significant contribution here: buildings, infrastructure, and open spaces can not only avoid emissions but also store carbon through materials and construction methods.
Against this backdrop, Drees & Sommer and EPEA have joined the newly founded Alliance for Carbon Removal in Construction . Initiated by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), the platform brings together companies, research institutions, planning and consulting firms, and other stakeholders to build knowledge, drive innovation, and accelerate the implementation of effective Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) solutions in the construction and real estate industry.

At the same time, numerous questions remain regarding effectiveness, economic viability, regulatory requirements, and certification. The alliance provides a platform to pool knowledge from research and practice and to provide guidance for the construction and real estate sector.
For Drees & Sommer and EPEA, this membership is a logical step. For many years, we have been supporting companies, developers, and manufacturers in developing circular, resource-efficient, and climate-effective solutions. Storing carbon in materials, products, and buildings can become an important complement to emission reduction measures in the future.
