Release of Cradle to Cradle Certified® Version 5

11 February 2026

The Cradle to Cradle Product Innovation Institute (C2CPII) has the new Cradle to Cradle Certified® Version 5 presented.

The revised version of the globally recognized standard strengthens the focus on measurable product and production requirements and helps companies to demonstrate sustainability in a data-based and transparent way.

Since the publication of the book “Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things,” it's clear that products should not only do less harm, but also make a positive contribution. However, the framework conditions have changed significantly: Regulatory diversity, volatile supply chains and the rise of digital platforms mean that reliable data on material health, circularity and climate-friendly production methods are becoming increasingly relevant. Version 5 responds exactly to that.

The most important new features of version 5

  • Clarified and simplified requirements based on five years of practical experience
  • More emphasis on product and production-related documentation rather than on process or company-wide requirements
  • Introduction of a clear structure for the three types of certification:
    • Cradle to Cradle Certified® Full Scope
    • Cradle to Cradle Certified® Material Health
    • Cradle to Cradle Certified® Circularity
  • Preparation for a new digital certification platform (start 2026) that makes certified products visible in online purchasing systems and AI‑supported decision tools
  • Still fully compatible with existing sustainability standards and building rating systems such as LEED, DGNB or WELL

Why version 5 is relevant

Version 5 makes Cradle to Cradle Certified® an even stronger tool for the market, especially for companies that want to use sustainability as a strategic advantage.
The data-based approach enables clearly communicable results, automated approvals and better integration into digital value chains.

Transition periods and next steps

  • From On March 16, 2026, the institute accepts version 5 certifications.
  • Certifications in accordance with version 4.1 are still possible until December 31, 2027.
  • Products that are already certified according to version 4.0 or 4.1 can without re-evaluation be converted to version 5.

EPEA supports the transition

As an accredited assessment body, we support companies in all phases, from initial strategic assessment to data collection to full certification in accordance with version 5. Our focus: robust material data, sustainable transformation and market-oriented communication.
