KÖNIGSKINDER project — sustainability meets urban diversity
On the former SPINELLI site in Mannheim, the KÖNIGSKINDER project is creating a pioneering district that combines living, working and living in a special way. Developed by DEUTSCHE WOHNWERTE, the project is an example of sustainable and livable urban development of 123 residential units.
The architectural design comes from the renowned Viennese office AllesWirdGut Architektur ZT. The combination of different materials, distinctive levels of elevation and the dominant color green creates a district with a high quality of stay and a strong identity.
In close collaboration with EPEA GmbH — Part of Drees & Sommer A comprehensive life cycle assessment was carried out for the project. The aim was to analyse and optimize the environmental impact of the construction project over the entire life cycle of 50 years. The analysis followed the criteria of the DGNB system and made it possible to identify ecological “hot spots” within the building structure. This enabled targeted measures to reduce the CO₂ footprint be seized and economic optimization potential is identified at the same time.
These benefits underline the importance of ecological accounting in construction and show how both ecological and economic goals can be achieved through targeted measures.
